Lieutenant General Akhtar Nawaz has been appointed as new National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman on Tuesday (today).
Prime Minister Imran Khan during a cabinet meeting in Islamabad, approved the appointment of Lieutenant General Akhtar Nawaz as new NDMA Chairman.
Lt Gen Akhtar Nawaz will replace the Lt Gen Mohammad Afzal as NDMA Chairman who was appointed as NDMA head back in 2019 last year.
Prior to this, the outgoing NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Mohammad Afzal had met with PM Imran Khan. The premier lauded his services especially during the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic and conveyed his best wishes for future endeavors.
NDMA
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), is an autonomous and constitutionally established federal authority mandated to deal with whole spectrum of disasters and their management in the country.
The NDMA formulate and enforces national disaster policies at federal and provisional levels and collaborates closely with various government ministries, military forces, and United Nations-based organizations to jointly coordinate efforts to conduct its disaster management, search and rescue, and wide range of humanitarian operations in the country and abroad.
Codified under the Article 89(1) of the Constitution of Pakistan, the institution is chaired by the appointed chairman, either civilian or military officer, and directly reports to the Prime Minister of Pakistan as its chief operations coordinator.
