Rome: Italy has confirmed coronavirus death toll to have surpassed 10,000 with more than 97,000 confirmed cases.
With 97,689 confirmed cases, Italy appears to have the highest death rate on the planet as 10,779 people have died due to COVID-19 coronavirus, overwhelming its health care system to its limits.

Italy now has the second-highest number of confirmed cases in the world after the United States, which stands at 140,886 with 2,467 reported casualties.
Dr. Massimo Galli, the head of the infectious disease unit at Sacco Hospital in Milan has warned that Italy’s current projection of confirmed coronavirus cases is not representative of the actual number of people that have been infected by the novel virus as only the most severe cases are being tested.
Italy has the world’s largest elderly population in the world after Japan, which is another factor behind the country’s high death rate.
More than 600,000 confirmed coronavirus cases have been reported world-wide, with more than 33,000 deaths.
