The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan, on Thursday, reprimanded federal government over the poor safety records of Pakistan Railways (PR).
Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed headed the SC bench that heard the suo motu case regarding Pakistan Railway’s financial losses and reprimanded government over its failure to improve the safety record of Pakistan Railways (PR).
During the hearing, the top judge questioned the allocations of new appointments in the department, and remarked that has already 77,000 employees, whereas Railway Minister Sheikh Rasheed had claimed at generating 100,000 new jobs.
Expressing disappointment over train crashes that have resulted in dozens of casualties, CJP Gulzar Ahmed sated, “The railway secretary, chief executive officer, and all divisional superintendents will have to be fired,”

Responding to court’s queries and concerns, the law officer stated that the Pakistan Railways intends to slash its employees to 56,000, meanwhile the 100,000 new appointments announced by the federal minister were regarding ML-1 project.
The court then adjourned the case for one month and directed planning division to submit the report on the ML1 project on the next hearing.
